It’s easy to pile on the pounds while on holiday and turn a fun experience into a dieting nightmare when you get back home.
However, with some forethought, you can avoid this and keep your figure during your vacation. Here are a few tips to help you along.
1. Before boarding your flight, pack a healthy snack like nuts or dried fruit to avoid sugary or fast food options.
2. Choose water rather than an alcoholic beverage or a soft drink. Alcohol dehydrates your body and soft drinks are packed with sugars or, worse, artificial sweeteners that not only pile on the fat but also undermine your health.
3. Pack a pair of trainers for walking and for outdoor activities. Sightseeing can be turned into calorie-burning exercise by increasing your walking pace. You can also join the joggers on an early morning jog or walk before breakfast.
4. Take the stairs rather than the lift to go up and down to and from your hotel room. This is a good cardio workout that you can increase in intensity at will by going faster.
5. Pack your bathing suit. If your hotel has a pool or is close to the beach. Swimming burns about 300 calories an hour and is an excellent all body exercise. Don’t rule out swimming just because you’re going to a city. Apart from the public swimming pools, lakes and rivers also provide opportunities for a dip.
6. Go for a walk on the beach and wade in the sea. Walking on sand is a way to firm and tone leg muscles while the feet and the toes get a beneficial massage.
7. Your hotel might be equipped with a gym, or else make sure you book a hotel that has one. Take advantage of the facilities and include a workout in your daily timetable. If you workout before breakfast, you will boost-start your metabolism and help your body burn more calories throughout the day.
8. Dance the night away. Check out local discos or night clubs and burn 300 calories an hour while having fun and getting to familiarize yourself with the local scene. Remember to keep away from the peanuts and the alcoholic beverages. If you can’t resist having a cocktail, opt for a fruit-based one rather than a creamy pina colada.
